Note: This article was originally published in October 2019 and was recently updated with some new details for the 30th anniversary of the song’s release.

It’s been 30 years since Pearl Jam released its very first song. About six weeks before its debut album Ten hit music stores, what would be the third track on that seminal album was introduced. What a life Pearl Jam’s “Alive” has lived since it was released on July 7, 1991. Since then, the band has played the song live 763 times, according to PJStatTracker — and 770 times in all (as of this writing)…

A screen shot from the viral video ‘Dumb Shining Moment.’

On the latest episode of my ‘Getting Caught Up’ podcast, I talked to Andrew Goldstein — a longtime TV writer and producer who is the brains behind a short comedy video that went viral on social media in early November 2020, just after Election Day.

The video racked up millions of views on several different social media platforms. Goldstein talks about how he came up with the idea for the video and put the whole thing together in a matter of about three days.

The video is a highlight reel chronicling four years of gaffes by then President Donald Trump…

In this very first episode, I get caught up with my old friend, the writer and performer Adam Wade. Adam is one of the best writers and storytellers I know. We go back a long way, and met more than 20 years ago when we were both in the NBC Page program. In this episode, we had a conversation about a number of things, including Adam’s Audible original ‘You Ought To Know Adam Wade,’ our experiences working in the media business, the NBC Page program, Adam’s history as a live storyteller at the Moth, and the famous comedian who…

Ordinarily, at this time of year, these fields would be filled with kids playing baseball — one game waiting for the previous to finish. Not this year. Fields are empty, mounds of dirt sit at infield positions usually occupied by second basemen and shortstops. It’s a scene playing out in many small towns across America. Coaches, players, dads, and moms are all missing the games, the competition, the fun.

My son, Mason, and I went out on Saturday — the early-spring weather was perfect —…

In an interview last year following the death of David Bowie, Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell talked about how music artists often aren’t fully appreciated until after they’ve died. Talking to Rolling Stone, he said, “You don’t know how important someone is to you as an artistic influence until suddenly they’re gone. I’ve certainly been having that experience. It’s kind of equal parts sad and celebratory to think, ‘Awesome. What an amazing career he had and what an amazing legacy he’s left for everybody.’”

I bring this up because I’ve been wanting to write a little post on what a…

David Bowie fans shocked by news on Monday of the musician’s unexpected death have spent the week listening to Bowie’s greatest hits online and watching his videos.

On Monday, Bowie shattered Adele’s single-day record for video views on Vevo. And fans streamed his music in enormous numbers as well. No song in Bowie’s catalogue was being streamed more than his 1977 rock anthem “Heroes.” There are numerous “Heroes” covers out there — from The Wallflowers to Bon Jovi to Monae Janelle, to The Toadies, who this week released a free download of a live version they’d recorded. All of them…
